Matt's passion for the church, the community, and life transformation is evident in every aspect of his leadership and teaching at First. In his years at First, he has encouraged each person in the congregation to draw closer in their walk with Jesus.
Before joining the staff at First in 1999, Matt worked in campus ministry at the University of Minnesota, Carleton College, and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. He received his BA in History from Yale University, and MDiv and DMin from Bethel Seminary in St. Paul. When not at church, Matt and his wife Erika spend much of their time following their kids, Madelyn and Isaiah, from one high school event to another: soccer, gymnastics, swimming, orchestra, choir, or track and field.
Where might you see Matt hanging out downtown? "You will probably see me at my favorite coffee shop (Espresso Royale) or my favorite breakfast place (Eggy's Diner). Or maybe along the Loring Greenway—it's peaceful, and I meet a lot of people with great dogs there."
