Doug was born and raised in a sports-minded family in Keokuk, Iowa with his one older brother. He bowled, golfed, played baseball, tennis, and basketball at a very early age. Amy was born and raised in Minneapolis with her four siblings. She grew up at First Baptist Church and can list each of her Sunday School teachers - one of whom led her to the Lord.

Doug and Amy met when they were members of a team of ten who went to Japan for a five-week mission trip. That trip dramatically changed their lives. Because of a close friendship with Amy and Mark Esterley from the same ministry trip to Japan, Doug ended up attending the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Amy started her degree in Business Administration at Bethel College, then finished with two years at the U of M.

In August 2016 Doug and Amy will have completed 25 years of ministry at Rio Grande Bible Institute in Edinburg, Texas. RGBI (Rio Grande Bible Institute) is a team-oriented ministry where many skills and abilities blend together in the school's goal to train ministers of the gospel. Most recently, God is calling RGBI students to some of the most difficult mission fields on the globe.
