Missionary, United States

Wayne and Mary Joyce Thyren

The Thyrens work with Timber Bay, a ministry that uses a dynamic camping and community approach to seek out the unseen kids among us who struggle the most.

    Organization:

    Timber Bay

    Role/Title:

Area Director. This involves directing all staff and programs in the community of Brooklyn Center, MN. It also involves providing direct service to at-risk teens & their parents.

Beyond the ministry in Brooklyn Center, Wayne is on Timber Bay's leadership team and supervise the Area Directors in 3 other communities.

    Biography:

Mary Joyce grew up in Crystal, MN and graduated from St. Cloud State. Wayne grew up in Thief River Falls, MN and graduated from Bemidji State. They were both a part of InterVarsity and met at one of their retreats in Colorado. Since Mary Joyce grew up at First Baptist, they were married there in 1971. They now have 3 married children and 6 grandchildren.

Before the Thyrens were married, Mary Joyce was a Girls Club Director for Union Gospel Mission. She also worked at the Billy Graham Assoc., General Mills, and nannied for 4 different families. She also watches all of the grandchildren one day a week until they go off to school. Some of this was interrupted by a serious illness, which is now somewhat improved.

Wayne was a secondary school teacher for 8 years in Brooklyn Park and joined Timber Bay in 1978. After 10 years with Timber Bay, Wayne worked at TreeHouse for 24 years. Wayne is now back at Timber Bay and has been there for the past 4 years. Throughout his employment, Wayne has consistently worked with teens and their parents.

The Thyren's have lived in the same house in Maple Grove for 44 years.

What is your favorite thing about Minneapolis?

The culture and quality of life. Though the Thyrens aren't connected with the city of Minneapolis itself, two of their children live there and they have a long-time connection to First Baptist. They also enjoy the Minneapolis-based sports teams.
